Aims for IDERN

IDERN was born out of the challenging Research Pedagogies Conference held at McGill University in April 2007. This conference brought researchers from a variety of countries who work in the field of doctoral education who sought to broaden the field of research into doctoral education by bringing trans-national perspectives together under one roof.
The aim of the IDERN network is to take forward the work begun at that conference: to broaden and expand the field of research into doctoral education by providing an opportunity for researchers to share knowledge and perspectives in a trans-national online forum and to work towards future research collaboration.
There has been an increasing level of research activity in doctoral education over the past decade. Much of this work has often been fragmented and localised. IDERN seeks to create opportunities for developing and expanding the conceptualisation and investigation of doctoral education across national boundaries at a time of increased movement and change. A central element of this agenda is to build the capacity to influence the shaping of future doctoral education policy and practice around the world.
